Of course with twitter you're only able to convey a very short/small amount of information.

With email you can provide real help or assistance. You can go into a bit of detail. You can provide one on one advice.

Like any communication you need to choose the right medium for the right audience.

I think you're right in some ways, but you've simplified the point to stack the deck in your favor.

The reason that email is attrocious is because it's filled with crap: spam, people covering their ass at work and cc'ing everyone, etc. Sure, it's better to take those types of things and put them in an ambient attention stream like Twitter.

But what about the power of personal communication? Surely it's better to get a wonderful letter (handwritten!) from a friend for your birthday than a post on a Facebook wall?

I think that Twitter has done a wonderful job at opening up public short messaging. But there are still many things that you'd rather txt your friends directly rather than post as an @ reply.

But the notion of public/private is an important one. For example, the whole premise of drop.io is that there may be blogs, music, etc that you don't want publicly available on a blog or tumblelog. And they've probably got a valid business there.

Yes, yes, yes! And not only can everyone see that this is happening - they also know where to look in the future, because it's all in one place.
